Report convened has it that plans by Ghana Education Service are far advanced to implement another allowance for basic school teachers.
Teacher in the Senior High Schools are entitled to responsibility allowance, this allowance is paid to teachers for taking up additional roles in the school.
Additional roles in the Senior High Schools which qualified a teacher to be paid allowance are:
Headmaster
Assistant Headmaster
Senior House Master/mistress
House Master/Mistress
Form Master/Mistress
Head of Department/Programs
School Chaplain/School Imam
Their colleagues in the basic schools have no allowance, management of Ghana Education Service has planned allowance package for the basic School teacher.
Management is yet to come out with the criteria for the allowance to be paid to the teachers who qualified for such allowance.
The Basic School teacher has for far too long been marginalized and denied the right to responsibility allowance. Currently, it is only Heads of Basic Schools that receive responsibility allowance.
It states, an additional duty allowance, shall be paid to an employee who take up additional responsibility aside their work schedules.
In Ghana Education Service a staff who take up additional roles are paid allowance.
This form of allowance will help to cushion teachers salary.
Teachers salary nowadays is nothing to write home, other public sector workers receive some allowances but teachers in the basic schools have no allowances on their payslips.
