Responsibility Allowance: Pay Basic School Teachers -Education Ministry Directed

The president of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbornu has said that teachers at the basic level deserve to be paid responsibility allowance.

Speaking at the NAGRAT National Council meetings held some few days ago in Accra, the outspoken leader of the association stressed that most basic school teachers perform extra duties as managers of the classroom but sadly, are paid no allowance.

In the same vein, Mr. Carbornu noted that housemasters and mistresses offer guidance and counseling aside other services at the senior high level, however, no form of allowance is paid to them as well. “Teachers in the Basic Schools perform responsibilities such as Class Teacher, Housemaster/ Mistress, guidance and counseling coordinators etc., yet do not receive any allowance.” He said.

According to Mr. Carbornu, his outfit, together with other teacher unions, is going to put all the necessary pressure on her employer – GES to resolve this issue. He said, “NAGRAT shall engage with sister Unions to exert the necessary pressure on GES to address this.”


These are some of the few challenges in relation to payment of salary arrears, promotion arrears and other allowance like car maintenance allowance and transfer grants that confront a significant number of teachers employed by the Ghana Education Service since time immemorial.

These affected teachers have blamed their union leaders for being the cause of their woes. Many have said that the unions have kept mute or have been less thoughtful about their plights, which has cultivated to this menace.
