Villarreal president Fernando Roig has declared full support for new signing Thomas Partey, stressing the club’s commitment to the presumption of innocence as the Ghanaian midfielder faces legal proceedings in London.
Partey joined the Spanish club after leaving Arsenal, signing his contract while on bail over sexual assault charges.
“The player is currently undergoing legal proceedings. He maintains his innocence and denies the charges against him,” Roig said after Villarreal’s 2-0 preseason defeat to Aston Villa.
“The club upholds the presumption of innocence, and it will be the responsibility of the English courts to clarify the facts. We have spent years demonstrating our values with all kinds of activities.”
The Villarreal chief reiterated that the club condemns all forms of violence but insisted that until a court delivers a verdict, Partey must be treated like any other person.
“At this moment, Partey is as innocent as the rest of us here. A fundamental right like this must be respected,” he added.
Roig also addressed reports that Partey was booed during the friendly match. “The English whistled Partey. Not the Villarreal fans,” he explained.
“I wouldn’t like our own fans to whistle at players on our team. We must stand with the team and respect the presumption of innocence. He is not a convicted player.”
The president urged patience and cautioned against premature judgment, emphasising the midfielder’s right to continue his professional career while awaiting legal resolution.
“We must be cautious and wait for justice. Let’s not judge prematurely. Thomas has the right to do his job until there is a conviction,” Roig said.
Partey’s arrival at Villarreal has generated considerable attention in Spain and abroad, but Roig’s remarks signal the club’s determination to protect both the player’s rights and its principles during the ongoing legal process.
