Former Ghana international Alfred Duncan has opened up about his decision to retire from the Black Stars in 2019, citing a lack of respect from the national team setup as the primary reason.
In an interview with Sporty FM, Duncan revealed that he felt disrespected and undervalued by the team's hierarchy, which led him to step away from international duty at the peak of his career.
"I wasn't getting the respect I think I deserved," Duncan stated. "For a player like me, when I got to the peak of my career, I thought I deserved more respect, which I wasn't getting enough."
Duncan, who earned nine caps for Ghana between 2016 and 2018, believes that his decision to retire from international football was in the best interest of the team.
"I felt it was best to step aside for the young ones or those they believed were right for the team to have the chance to play."
The defensive midfielder has had a successful career in Italy, playing for top-tier clubs like Inter Milan, Sassuolo, Fiorentina, and Venezia.
Despite his early exit from international football, Duncan remains one of Ghana's most accomplished midfielders in European football.
